Brake Solutions for Ford 8" & 9" Rear Ends
(Muscle Cars, Vintage Mustangs, Street Rods, etc)
North Racecars offers a variety of disk brake solutions.
All of our brackets require removal and re-installation of the axle bearing.
If running 14" or 15", use the 10.6" rotor. If running larger wheels, we recommend the Cobra rotor and caliper for appearance.
All North Racecars brake kits retain drum brake offset. See the description and Housing End Chart below.

When deciding which brake to use it must first be determined which rear end is in the car.
First determine if the rear is an 8" or 9" with small bearings. What is important is the bolt pattern on the end of the housing and the brake offset (see Housing End Chart).
Most Mustangs and other late 60s Fords came with 8" rear ends stock and many with upgraded horse power came with 9" rear ends but used the small bearing ends. Ford did this to not have to make different brakes and axles for the same car. The axles and brakes will interchange from a small bearing 9" to an 8". Most came with drum brakes and what is referred to as the standard 2.5" brake offset (see chart again). Some came with the shorter 2.25" offset, sometimes listed as the 2.3125" offset. Determining the offset requires more than just removing the drum in most cases. It is best determined with the drum and drum backing plate removed. Also the big drum and standard drums do not affect the brake offset. We have seen 8" rears with big drums and then a 9" with standard drums and both had the standard 2.5" offset.
The same information is needed for the large bearing. Look at the bolt pattern to determine which housing end is installed.
DO NOT LOOK THE SHAPE OF THE HOUSING END IT WILL NOT GIVE THE NEEDED INFORMATION, LOOK ONLY AT THE BOLT PATTERN THEY ARE NOT THE SAME FOR OLD AND NEW STLYE!
There are many aftermarket rear housing manufacturers and many use the square housing end with the old style bolt pattern. Also, many manufacturers also reproduce this housing pattern in the both old (D shape) and new (square style) pattern. Again, the only thing that matters is the bolt pattern.
Once the bolt pattern and offset have been determined decide which bracket will work for you.
Other notes: We had 3 of 4 wheels that were 14" fit the GT brakes. All 15" wheels we tried fit the GT brakes.
For Cobra brakes wheels must be 16" or larger. In our opinion, if running 17" or larger wheels, run the Cobra brakes — they just look better.

NOTE: Shipping costs are currently volatile & rising from our past experience, likely due to the rapid increases in oil prices & inflation in other carrier costs like labor. So please be aware that all orders may incur higher shipping charges. If we find this to be the case with your order, we will contact you for the additional cost before shipping.
